Alternative Licensure
Overview
- Almost all states offer an alternative license for music education, although some states may have limited districts or counties that can offer the pathway based on teacher shortage or other needs.
- Almost all states will require a district to offer a teaching contract prior to issuing an alternative license. The district needs to hire the candidate first.
- Usually, an alternatively licensed teacher must complete coursework, exams, and evaluations to transition to a full or standard teaching license.
- There is usually a limit on the number of years a person can hold an alternative license as they pursue their full teaching credential.
- Some states are starting to use a portfolio method, allowing other kinds of work experience to fulfill some of the requirements for a full teaching license.
